Representing Yourself

Many games, like Animal Crossing, have a main hero you can customize to look like you. In this version of the game, a first real range of options for skin tones made more players feel included. But players also asked for more inclusivity and created their own via the game's design tools. Island design options also let players represent their own cultural heritage. This freedom in representing yourself also extended to gender. The game, in all languages but the original Japanese version, lets you choose a "look" rather than a gender. This made it a more inclusive experience for players on the LGBTQI+ spectrum. This came at a time many experienced isolation from their usual support communities. With the cancellation of events like Pride, players created their own island Pride.
